Q: I work with a woman and have known her daughter for about 4 years through work. As I was leaving work the girls Father tells her to go ahead and ask me. He said her husband has a good job! The girl then asked me was there anything that I could help her with on her Quinceañera. Can you tell me the etiquette of this party and what this means?

Thanks,
Honored but Unsure

A: Dear Honored but Unsure : Your friend’s daughter is giving you a great honor in asking you to be a “padrino” or sponsor for her Quinceañera. She must think very highly of you!  Many families ask close friends and relatives to be padrinos or sponsors for the Quinceañera. Traditionally, the padrino helps the girl by providing the gown, bracelet, ring, earrings, tiara, Bible or Rosary, the catering, music, decorations or invitations for the ceremony and reception.  You may also consider helping with other accessories such as the tiara pillow, kneeling pillow, cake knife and serving set, the toasting glasses, a photo album, guest book, the last doll, scepter or favors. At our website: www.uniquelyquince.com you can see all the options available and get an idea of the costs.  I would recommend you get an understanding of the financial commitment and know how much you are willing to spend and if there are certain items you would like to help her with.   Then go speak to the girl and let her know that you are honored to be chosen as a padrino and that you would like to sponsor a specific item.  Generally, the padrinos are recognized in the invitation and in the ceremony itself.  For general information about the Quince tradition, go to the articles section of our website.  Here is a link to an article that will help you understand the tradition:  History of the Quinceañera    Let me know if you need help picking out a gift.
